It is completely landlocked and a narrow pass, the Khyber Pass links it to Pakistan. The Khyber Pass is one of the most important passes in the world, from the time of Alexander the Great. There are about 20 different ethnic groups living here, and each group has its own language and traditions.  At the turn of the 21st century, the country was more synonymous with war and terrorism. Today, Afghanistan is on the road to recovery, after decades of war.
